Questions? We have answers
This depends on a few things: which accounts you have with Monese, which country youโre receiving money from, and the currency of the money youโre receiving.
One more important thing to consider is whether the payment is considered โdomesticโ or โinternationalโ.
If you have a GBP account and receive money from another UK account in pounds sterling, this is considered a domestic payment. The details the sender needs can vary, but you can see these in your Monese app under your account details.
Typically, theyโll need your:
- Full name (as it is on your account)
- Account sort code
- Account number
If you have a EUR account and are receiving a payment from within the European Economic Area (EEA) or the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) in euro, this is considered a domestic payment.
SEPA is made up of these countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden, but also Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Switzerland and Monaco.
The details the sender needs can vary, but you can see these in your Monese app under your account details.
Typically, theyโll need your:
- Full name (as it is on your account)
- Account IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
If you have a RON account and are receiving money from another RON account in Romanian lei, this is considered a domestic payment. The details the sender needs can vary, but you can see these in your Monese app under your account details.
Typically, theyโll need your:
- Full name (as it is on your account)
- Account IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
An international payment is any payment that isnโt considered a domestic payment, and is typically the payment type when receiving money into a Monese account from a different country, currency or both.
For instance, receiving Hong Kong dollar into your GBP account is considered an international payment, as is receiving US dollars into your EUR account. In fact, receiving euros into your EUR account from the US would still be considered an international payment as the US isnโt in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
For these type of incoming payment, youโll need to ask the sender to make the payment using SWIFT. Youโll also need to subscribe to our โIncoming international transfersโ service. This allows us to give you a unique SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) IBAN (International Bank Account Number), which you can link to one of your Monese accounts.
SWIFT stands for the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.
Itโs a network that helps financial institutions move money internationally when itโs not possible to make the payment directly from one bank to another.
For example, if you send money from France to Italy, the transfer is made via SEPA โ so the money is moved between banks directly, and usually in just a couple of days.
If you make a transfer from the UK to the US, this would be considered an international (SWIFT) payment. This is because thereโs no way to send money directly from a UK bank to a US one, so the transfer is sent from one intermediary bank to another until it reaches the recipient bank.
If youโre not sure what bank details to use for receiving a payment, just follow these steps:
- Select the account you want to receive money into.
- Select the โAdd Moneyโ option
- Select the โBank transfer detailsโ option
- Select the country youโre receiving money from
Youโll then see the correct details to use for the transfer.
Your multi-currency IBAN wonโt work for domestic payments โ any incoming payment will fail, and be returned to the sender.
If you want to receive money in the currency of your Monese account, itโs easier and faster to use your local account details.
If you have a GBP account, you can receive GBP payments from within the UK using your account number and sort code.
If you have a EUR account, you can receive EUR from any country in the EU via SEPA using your EUR account details.
You can see your multi-currency IBAN alongside the currency account youโve chosen to link it to.
For example, if you link your multi-currency IBAN to your GBP account, weโll show these details alongside your GBP sort code and account number.
You can also see them if you:
- Select โBank Transferโ from the Add Money option
- Select a country that needs a SWIFT payment (if you have a multi-currency IBAN subscription)
- Youโll then see the correct details to share with the person sending you money
When you need to recieve an international payment, all you need to do is share your multi-currency IBAN with the person sending you money.
Some banks might ask for some extra details like your name, address, BIC/SWIFT code or bank name and the sender might ask you for these if so.
You can find all the details you need on your app.
As soon as we receive the transfer from the person sending you money, weโll convert it into your chosen Monese account currency, and add it to your balance.
With any incoming payment, we unfortunately dont know the status of the payment until it reaches us. But donโt worry โ as soon as we receive it, weโll convert the transfer into your chosen Monese account currency, and add it to your balance.
In general, international payments take 2-5 working days to arrive.
If youโre waiting for an international payment and itโs been longer than this, you should get in touch with the person sending you money. They can contact their bank for more information on when exactly the payment was sent and whether your account details were entered correctly.
Usually, all of this information will be available in a proof of payment document that your sender can get from their bank.
Your multi-currency IBAN comes with a low annual subscription fee.
In addition to this annual fee, we also charge an exchange fee to convert any incoming payments you receive to the right currency before adding the money to your Monese account.
The annual subscription fee and the currency exchange fees depend on your Monese pricing plan.
We also show you a breakdown of these fees before you confirm your subscription in your app. Please check our pricing plan here.
