Monese + ProxyAddress

A way to open an account if you’re facing homelessness

Losing your home also means losing your address

An address is not just a location — it’s a de facto form of ID. Without a fixed address, you’re cut off from crucial services such as healthcare, receiving post, applying for jobs, getting benefits and opening a bank account.

ProxyAddress provides an address when you need it

ProxyAddress provides those facing homelessness with a consistent, secure and free address, which they can use to access the support they need, when they need it most.

Monese is here to help

As part of a pilot programme with the London borough of Lewisham, we’re partnering with ProxyAddress to provide those who are registered as homeless with a Monese account. A government-issued ID and an allocated proxy address is all that’s needed.

How it works

1. Register for ProxyAddress

You can do this by approaching Lewisham Council. You can find more information about this process on the Council’s website.

2. Choose Monese as your provider

You’ll be given the option to choose from a list of available account providers, and Monese will be one of them. You’ll get a non-personalised Monese card that you’ll be able to activate in the app.

3. Sign up from your phone

Download the app on your iOS or Android phone. You’ll then be taken through a few identity checks, so please have your ID at hand.

4. Use your allocated address

When you’re asked for your address, use the one allocated to you by ProxyAddress. And once you type in the code in the Promotions section, we’ll also upgrade you to our Monese Premium account for free.

Common questions

Who can get a ProxyAddress?

The council has to give you assistance under the Homelessness Reduction Act if you’re homeless or within 8 weeks of being made homeless. If this applies to you, you can likely get a ProxyAddress. You can find out more on the ProxyAddress website.

Where is this programme available?

The pilot programme is available to those who are registered homeless with Lewisham Council.

How does the non-personalised card work?

These cards won’t have your name printed on them, but you’ll be able to use them in the same way as a regular card. Once you’ve opened your Monese account, all you need to do is head to the ‘Card’ section and follow the instructions to activate it.

Where can I find the code I need to upgrade to Premium?

You’ll get this code from ProxyAddress during the registration process. Once you’ve opened your Monese account, head to the ‘Promotions’ section of the app and type it in.
